Get better every time you skate with this one weird tip…

Get lower!

That’s it. It’s pretty simple.

The more you roller skate in a squat (as though you are peeing in the woods), the more stable you will be. Especially if you are a new skater, working on a low, deep stance will help your balance, and help you be more comfortable on skates. If you stand upright on skates, you greatly increase your odds of falling on your ass. Try to keep your feet shoulder width apart, and keep your toes, knees and shoulders in a line, head up, chest up, and your hips out behind you.

Want more tips? Then come to Raw Meat Vancouver Roller Skating! We meet every Saturday—what are you waiting for? Join us at Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar St., from 5-7 every week. Sessions are $7 drop-in. Come on out!

What to bring:

You must have roller skates, and all safety gear: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet, and mouth guard. The venue also requires everyone to use white or light-coloured, non-marking toe stoppers. If your knee pads are black, please cover them with white, non-marking hockey tape. Vertical strips of tape work best.

When & Where:

Sessions are $7, and take place every Saturday from 5-7 at Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar St., Vancouver, very close to Rupert Skytrain Station. Sessions are drop-in. Just grab your gear and come join us! All levels of roller skater are welcome, from beginner to advanced. We’ll teach you the basics of roller skating and roller derby (but all sessions are non-contact).

And remember Raw Meat Vancouver Roller Skating has just two simple rules: 1. Be Safe, 2. Don’t be an asshat.
